In 1997 we decided to get involved with racing as a fun and exciting way to spend family time together on the weekends.
It has continued to grow over the years and has become much more than just a hobby. David shows great potential and has aspirations of racing Nascar Sprint Cup. For the 2009 Season, David will be racing the #33 Late Model Stock Car at Old Dominion Speedway. Jessie is returning to the race track this year and will be driving the #3 Bandolero at Old Dominion Speedway. Ryan is now driving the #3 Legends Car at Old Dominion Speedway…it‘s a family thing…

TERRY - For the first time ever ODS gave out an award called the “BETTER HALF AWARD” - in recognition of her willingness and extra effort to help her family and other racers during the 2008 season.
Saturday, April 25, 2009- Saturday night was the first time this year that all three kids raced on the same night, so with that on the schedule NANA and Pappy came down to Old Dominion to help, it’s a good thing they came because as hot and hectic as it was with three cars racing we couldn’t have done it with out theirs or Roger Austin’s help.
Jessie did well in her two practices and was 2nd quick in both practices. Then for the first time ever Jessie had to time trial for her starting spot in the feature, that went pretty good too and she timed in 2nd fastest which gave her the 2nd starting spot. On the start of the feature she couldn’t get down into the lower lane on the track and the 3rd place car was able to pass her for 2nd place. Jessie and the front two cars stayed close together but Jessie wasn’t able to make any moves to pass so she ended up finishing 3rd, she ran a real good race and we’re all pleased for her first race ever in a Bandolero.
Ryan also had two good practice sessions and when it came time to qualify he was ready, Ryan put down his best lap ever in a legend car and qualified 4th, with the invert he started the feature in 3rd. On the start of the race there was a lot of shuffling around and tight racing in the front group and Ryan ended up sliding back to 6th after a few laps, he ran 6th for the remainder of the race and on the last lap the 3rd and 4th place cars had some contact and one of them ended up in the wall. Ryan went on by and crossed the line in 5th but the officials penalized the 3rd place car for the contact and that moved Ryan up to 4th. Another good finish for him and he is really showing some consistency which is very important in racing and that is why he is 3rd in points now.
When we went to take David’s car to the scale area for the first time of the day his brakes weren’t working right so we pushed it back to the trailer and fixed them or at least we thought we did. During his first practice he only had about 50% braking capability so we never got fully up to speed. We worked on the brakes again and this time we really had them fixed. David’s second practice went much better and he ran some decent lap times. About half way through the third practice the car developed some kind of carburetor problem so we didn’t get any good laps in. I guess it was going to be one of those nights. We got the carburetor fixed and made some changes to the set up and got ready for time trials. Everything went well but with the lack of practice he didn’t get a great lap and he timed in 13th quickest.
The race was the first 100 lap race of the season and was going to be the longest race In David’s career. His goal was simple take his time and work his way forward. The race went green flag for about 40 laps before the first caution and David had made his way to 9th by then, then it went about another 45 laps under the green and David was up to 6th. That caution set up what should have been a short run to the end but not to be, everyone started getting rammy and there was a string of back to back cautions. The final restart came with three laps to go and David’s car was handling good and running good the field came around to complete the first lap after the caution and the leaders tangled on the front straight David picked a great line to go past the wreck and then one of the lap cars came piling in from about ten car lengths back and clobbered David, he still managed to get past the wreck and made the next lap and was sitting 3rd, the officials put out the red flag and then the checkered flag and we thought we finished 3rd but evidentially we were wrong and some how they scored us in 8th place, we’re not sure why but all the discussion with the officials didn’t change anything, so like I said earlier it was going to be one of those nights. We ended up with a wrecked race car (see attached pictures) and not the finish we should have had. David is currently 7th in points. Hopefully David’s luck will turn around.
